He is Risen!

No resurrection, no Christianity! The resurrection in Christian faith is not one of the options but the option that makes Christianity Christianity.

Today we see the growing number of Christians and even churches taking a stance that they don't believe Jesus' resurrection as a real incident. They have a sound reasoning for that. They're trying to save the dying Christian faith from the tradition. So, they try to reinterpret, re-illustrate the story of resurrection. They don't take the resurrection story in the bible as it is. In other words, they don't take it literally. Instead, they take it rhetorically, or metaphorically. They're saying what really happened is not important. What is important is the underlying message from the story.

For example, Marcus Borg, an influential New Testament scholar, said that the resurrection has two underlying meanings. First, Jesus is alive. Second, Jesus is the Lord. Of course, when he said, "Jesus is alive" he didn't mean it literally. He meant it as a metaphor. Jesus is not literally alive but we can take him and experience him like he is a living figure. The matter is our proclamation; our belief. Whether it's real or not, whether it's true or not, we just proclaim it with faith that "Jesus is alive".

The bottom line is this proclamation is nothing different from a four year old boy proclaiming that "I believe in Santa Clause!" And based on his belief, he takes Santa Clause as a real figure, and try do the good things so that he may earn a prize later on. Or, it's a similar thing that people looking at the mirror proclaiming, "I can do it! I'll be good!" - and we do know that by doing so may bring some positive effects in our hearts and life.

In the same way, we may experience something positive in our lives and minds when we proclaim, "Jesus is alive!" For example, at the threat of our death, when we proclaim, "Jesus is alive! Jesus is with me! Jesus overcame the death!"  we may receive a comfort in our hearts. This may also propel us to be a better person; to be moral and conscientious.

But people, think about this. When we say, "He is risen!", is this proclamation had nothing to do with the reality? Or, truth so to speak? Is this a simple catchphrase? Do you really think that Jesus came to alive rhetorically or metaphorically? Is only importance we should find from the story of resurrection is to find some positive effects that we can experience out of this proclamation? If you believe so, you are diminishing the resurrection from God's level to human level. This is not saving Christian faith from the tradition. This is how we bury our Christian faith to the death. This a false gospel that kills Christian faith.

What do we see and hear nowadays during Easter? In times of Easter, you will see Egg Hunt events all over the places - and church is not the exception. Is Easter about hunting eggs and get some goodies? If we don't get to the point of the real side of the resurrection, if we don't really hold onto the real resurrection, we will see no life - we will see no everlasting life that was promised and given by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

I think this is what we need to do. We must resurrect the resurrection! We must behold the real resurrection! So, we, Christians, can experience the real impact from the resurrection. Instead of we limit the meaning and experience of the resurrection in human level, we must elevate ourselves to the Godly level so that we may receive the power of God. We must not take the story of resurrection like one of accessories to ourselves that make us a better look but take it as a 'Big Bang' event that can re-create us as a new being.

People say the United States has been dramatically changed before and after the incident of 9/11. We all know that the impact of 9/11 was huge - not to speak about the shocking number of casualties and damages but because no one really have expected to see such a huge tragedy in our front yard. One of distinctive aftermath changes was the entire nation implemented a higher and stronger security system in every single airport. Also, many Americans have more fear to attend a large convocation, and this actually caused lower participation of some events.

We know that 9/11 terrorist attack was a real and historical event, and because of that this changed people's minds and life dramatically. If 9/11 tragedy did not exist and instead, a few people proclaimed that "There is a potential security risk so that we need to set the higher security system in the entire nation!" we wouldn't have seen this rapid change in the entire nation in such a short span of time.

Until the moment when Jesus' disciples met and eye-witnessed resurrected Jesus, they were simply a pathetic losers. They were busy hiding and running away from the threat of death. The very evening when Christ was risen disciples stayed in a house, locked the door, out of fear that they might be caught by the Jews (Jn 20:19). They had faith but it wasn't strong enough at all. But something mysterious thing had happened. Something miraculous thing had happened to them.

Because they were changed dramatically - they became literally a new being. The ones who were so much afraid of death, all of sudden, became the ones who seem like having no fear of death. If the story of resurrection of Jesus was nothing more than a metaphor, how we could logically and rationally explain the dramatic change in disciples in such a short span of time? And I'm not talking about one or two but all of them.

Should we dig into a litter further? [Empty Tomb] The bible says that the tomb where people laid Jesus' body became empty. If the bible story of resurrection was fictitious, then there must be a dead body somewhere. If the bible story of resurrection was made up story by people it would be more reasonable to find a story or even a trace how people had valued the Jesus' tomb or a clue of hidden body, and so on.

It is very culturally common trait that when a respected person died and buried in a tomb, people give a special reverence to this tomb - giving a special meaning to it. But there is no trace at all in case of Jesus. What is this mean? We can say that his resurrection was so real that people had no reason to commemorate the tomb.

[First witness] There is another. The first witness of resurrected Jesus was Mary Magdalene (Mk 16:9). From her the story of Jesus' resurrection had spread out. Her lips and her eyes was the birth place of this story. But we have to note that the woman, in general, in Jesus' time had a very low credit. Plus, Mary Magdalene was the one who had possessed by the seven demons but healed by Jesus.

If the story of resurrection is merely a made up story with an intention to make the hearers to believe this story, why on earth the writers of this story set the woman who even had a wrongful history as the first witness? Do you think it sounds reasonable? The answer is no. But it will sound reasonable if this woman was really a first witness of resurrected Jesus Christ.

The Christianity had embarked on the historical fact of Jesus' resurrection. When the first church was begun, Christians did not celebrate Easter once a year like we do today. They celebrated it every week. They gathered on Sundays because Jesus was resurrected on Sunday morning. That's how the Christians worship on Sundays.

First Christians did not gather in order to simply learn the teachings of Jesus. They gathered because Jesus was risen. The first preaching in the first church was not simply remembering and repeating the message of Jesus. They preached and proclaimed about the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus' resurrection reversed the Christian message from what Jesus had spoken to Jesus himself. Jesus' gospel became Jesus himself. People proclaimed about Jesus instead of proclaiming about what Jesus had proclaimed. Do you see the difference?

Therefore, the resurrection is pivotal not just because it is a foundation of Christian faith but because this faith in Jesus' resurrection actually fueled and formed the first Christians who founded and spread the Christianity. It was faith in resurrection that dramatically changed Jesus' disciples from pathetic losers - who still had faith with no power - to strong and powerful believers who weren't even afraid of the death.

Peter, as we all know, denied Jesus three times. But after he had witnessed the risen Christ he became a warrior of faith who was eventually crucified to death for he preached about Jesus' resurrection. And this is what he spoke about the resurrection:

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead," - 1Pet 1:3

Apostle Paul had no chance to meet the resurrected Christ in person. But through the help of the Holy Spirit he had an eye to see and understand the reality of Christ' death and resurrection, which transformed him dramatically from a persecutor of the Christian faith to a promulgator of the Christian faith - and in the end, he was martyred. This is what he said about the resurrection:

"Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe. Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain." - 1Cor 15:11-14

In order to be a disciple with a confidence and power; in order to live as a saved ones, as the light and salt of this world, we must have faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ that he really was risen from the dead. We must experience the power of God that was revealed through the resurrection. With this power we must refresh and shake ourselves and enter into a new level of life that God promises. We must become a new being through faith in the resurrection.

We can say that Jesus' death on the cross forgave our sins; and Jesus' resurrection invited us to the power of salvation. Let me explain it differently. Jesus' death on the cross opened the gate of salvation; Jesus' resurrection called us to enter into the door of salvation.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, the resurrection is a historical event. Jesus Christ was risen for real. If we can really believe this, we will no longer be the same person. We will no longer can live in the past. The whole world will be renovated, or re-created centered in Jesus Christ. We become a new being, new creature with the headship of Christ.

Let me close today's message with a word from apostle Paul to encourage you and me:
" I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God¡¯s power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God¡¯s right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also in the world to come." - Ephesians 1:19-21

I pray and hope that this incredible greatness of God's power, which worked in Christ, and which worked in the first Christians, may work in us in the same way, so that we will come out like a strong and powerful believers, disciples of Jesus Christ who even has no fear in death, and preach about the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

He is Risen!
Amen!
